A concept from the reading this weak I found interesting is Chapter 6’s compound claims and “or” Claims. The book describes a compound claim as “one composed of other claims, but which has to be viewed as just one claim.  The book also discusses alternatives. Alternatives “are the claims that are the parts of an “or” claim. The “or” links two claims to make a compound claim. For instance “I will drive the Nissan or ill drive the Toyota.

Another concept in chapter 6 the book discussed that I found interesting was the contradictory of a claim. The book states that the contradictory of the claim as “one that has the opposite truth-value in all possible circumstances”. The contradictory is sometimes labeled as the negation of a claim. An example would be Peyton Manning isn’t the best quarterback in the NFL, Tom Brady is”.  A contradictory claim would be “Peyton Manning is the best quarterback in the NFL not Tom Brady.

  1. I also found that compound claims were especially interesting because they have to be viewed as one claim. I thought it was weird that even though a compound claim is composed of two separate claims, it is not seen as two claims. It is similar to a compound word, which is also composed of two words but considered one, like sunflower or skateboard. I think you could have shown how your example of a compound claim is seen as one claim. You explained the contradictory of a claim well. You showed that a contradictory of a claim, or a negation, holds an opposite truth-value through your example.

  2. Hey, I think that your examples for both contradictory claims and compound claims were helpful. Every day people use compound claims, all the time without even knowing that it is just one claim. Before I used to think that even though it was only one sentence I thought compound claims had two seperate claims. Because someone is saying you can do one thing, or you can do the other thing. Contradictory claims is basically restating the sentence with its complete opposite, with a whole different meaning is then made with its contradictory. Contradictory is asserting the contrary or opposite of statements.
